JOURNEYS

JOURNEYS,

aka "trips" have been practiced across nearly every ancient culture and religion for thousands of years, using a wide range of natural "plant medicines".

This includes ayahuasca, peyote, and a vast array of other plant and animal species (ie. toad), which produce the active compounds that induce psychedelic experiences. With psilocybin, a journey dose is typically achieved by consuming around 3.5 grams of dried mushroom bodies, although these experiences can be achieved with as little as 2 grams depending on potency, user tolerance, and preparation. Heck, many people can achieve this states with breathwork and meditation alone.

These "journeys" are often sought by individuals looking for insights, healing, spiritual experiences, or personal growth. but "journeys" should always be done in a controlled and intentional manner, as the effects can be quite profound, unpredictable, and at times overwhelming. so before taking yourself on an unguided journey, it is important to recognize the potential dangers and take reasonable precautions.

SAFETY FIRST

These journeys are not to be taken lightly; they require preparation, intention, and a safe environment.

SET & SETTING: Your mindset ("set") and physical environment ("setting") are crucial. Approach the journey with clear intentions, and choose a comfortable, safe space free from interruptions.

SUPPORT: Having a trusted, sober sitter or guide present can provide reassurance and assistance if needed.

PHYSICAL READINESS:
Ensure you're well-rested, hydrated, and have eaten light, nourishing food beforehand.
Safety and Legal Considerations

MENTAL HEALTH: Individuals with a history of psychosis or certain mental health conditions should avoid psychedelic use.

CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS:: Psilocybin can interact with certain medications; consult a healthcare professional if unsure.

LEGAL STATUS:: Psilocybin remains a controlled substance in many jurisdictions. Ensure you are informed about local laws and regulations.

MANAGING EXPECATIONS

A high dose of psilocybin mushrooms will induce altered states of consciousness that - while sharing commonalities from user to user, - are completely subjective experiences. These experiences can lead to deep introspection, emotional release, and a sense of connection to something greater than oneself. Common effects include:

  • Visual and auditory enhancements: Colors may appear more vivid, and sounds can take on new dimensions.

  • Altered perception of time and space: Time may seem to slow down or speed up, and spatial boundaries can blur.

  • Ego dissolution: A temporary loss of the sense of self, leading to feelings of unity and interconnectedness.

  • Emotional catharsis: Repressed emotions may surface, allowing for processing and healing.

These journeys are not to be taken lightly; they require preparation, intention, and a safe environment.

Integration: Making Sense of the Experience

Post-journey integration involves reflecting on and incorporating insights gained during the experience into daily life.Practices such as journaling, meditation, and therapy can aid in this process. Integration helps translate the journey's revelations into meaningful, lasting change. Remember, the journey doesn't end with the experience itself; integration is key to unlocking its full potential.

A HEROIC DOSE

Popularized by ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, the "heroic dose" refers to consuming 5 grams or more of dried psilocybin mushrooms, typically alone, in darkness, and with eyes closed. Given the subjective and variable nature of psychedelics, it could take more or less than 5 grams to achieve these effects.

Numbers aside, the purpose is to consume a dose that is significantly higher than what would typically be used for recreational or therapeutic purposes, with the aims to facilitate profound, "breakthrough" experiences, including ego dissolution and encounters with archetypal visions. Many will experience intense and overwhelming feelings of fear, anxiety, or confusion as a "bad trip", but it is important to note that some of the most profound insights will be revealed during these journeys.

Caution: Such high doses can lead to intense psychological and emotional experiences. They are not recommended for beginners and should only be undertaken with thorough preparation and support. We recommend starting slow when working with the medicines  -- you can always do more, but you can't do less.
